This year I'll be hosting my long holiday art camp once again but this time I'll be doing it in my studio!
It's an exciting new space where I get to share my processes with young creative people. We hope to do one field trip to see art spaces around Nairobi. View some of the previous works the kids have made below! for more info on the workshop checkout artcamp.waruguru.com Happy to be exhibiting with Jonathan Fraser, Nelson Ijaaka, Namikoye Wanjala, Sujay Shah and Andrew Chege
See more of their work on HERE If Not Now is a group project that aims to boost the careers of select young artists in Nairobi. If Not Now is an project of young art-makers who seek agency on their own terms. It is an effort to carve out a niche in an expanding art space that has no surface onto which they can grasp. This exhibition considers alternate ways and places that art can be shared with the public outside of conventional gallery and educational structures/systems. Where else can art be experienced and by whom? And how does the work interact with its environment? If Not Now is an active participation in and a laying claim to a time and place that is (meant to be) equally available to those who make art-objects/concepts. To wait then, is to wait eternally. And if not now, when? In order to have these opportunities we seek as young artists - to exhibit, engage with and earn from our art - we would need to make them ourselves. And in addition to creating these opportunities for ourselves, we are adding to the arts infrastructure within Nairobi. Through self driven initiative, those involved will not only be able to expand their career prospects significantly but also add much needed diversity to the current art scene in Nairobi. This is not only regarding the type of art consumed but also what counts as art and art making in Nairobi. I recently did my first artist in residency program at Artspace Sydney, Artspace is Australia’s leading interdisciplinary space for the production and presentation of contemporary art. Artspace’s mission is to enhance their culture through a deeper engagement with contemporary art.
To find out more about them click on this link Artspace During my time in Sydney I wanted to make freely and experiment with new techniques. I made monoprints with watercolour paint, a new process I've never tried before. I also made some Lino prints using a relief press that was new to me. The prints came from observational drawings done in Sydney of people in transit as well as landscapes. As part of this, we asked visual artists working and living in Africa to respond to the question: “What do you hope for African youth?” A collection of their responses is published in an art book, Hope, Energy, and Ingenuity: Voices of African Youth.
